Bringing culture change to government can be a tall order. It is exactly what I set out to do when I took office as secretary of state. In the department of state, the dedicated staff is providing a clear example to Tennesseans that government can deliver value to its customers each day.
The department of state takes pride in setting a high standard for customer service in state government. This is achieved by focusing on being accountable to one another, providing value to the taxpayers and emphasizing accuracy in transactions both large and small. What once may have been viewed as an act of shuffling paper has become helping an entrepreneur realize a dream of starting a business, or locating an important ancestry document or providing a vital step in the process toward an international adoption. It is this sense of purpose that is leading a valuable change in culture in state government.
